What Is a Photocell?

A photocell is a light-sensitive electrical control that switches outdoor lighting on or off according to surrounding brightness. The device responds to daylight and darkness, allowing fixtures to operate without a manual switch or scheduled timer. Photocells are common in security lighting, exterior wall packs, post lights, and other applications that need automatic dusk-to-dawn operation.

Key Takeaways About Photocell

  • A photocell responds to ambient light, not movement.
  • Correct placement helps prevent unwanted daytime operation.
  • A photocell is not the same as a motion sensor.

How Photocell Works

A photocell uses a light-sensitive element to detect the brightness around a fixture. As daylight fades, the control changes the electrical state of the lighting circuit and allows the lamp to turn on. When daylight returns, the control changes state again and turns the lamp off.

Photocells are commonly installed on exterior fixtures, sign lighting, and security lighting systems. Position affects performance because nearby lamps, reflective surfaces, or sheltered locations can change the light reaching the sensor. A motion sensor responds to movement in a detection area, while a photocell responds to the overall light level. Some systems combine both controls so lighting operates only during darkness and activity.

From the Electrician Pittsburgh team

When we install or inspect a photocell, we check its orientation, wiring, and connection to the lighting control. We also look for nearby light sources that could make the sensor read the area as brighter than it is. Our team tests the fixture response under suitable conditions and checks whether the control matches the security lighting design.

Photocell in Practice: A Real-World Example

A wall-mounted security light beside a Pittsburgh home can use a photocell to operate from dusk through dawn. The control keeps the fixture off during daylight without requiring the homeowner to adjust a switch each morning.
