What Is a Tamper-Resistant Receptacle?

A Tamper-Resistant Receptacle is an electrical outlet with internal shutters that block access to the energized contact openings unless a matching plug applies pressure to both openings at once. The design helps prevent objects from entering one opening alone. These receptacles are commonly selected for areas where children may be present.

Key Takeaways About Tamper-Resistant Receptacle

  • Internal shutters cover the contact openings until a plug engages them.
  • The receptacle accepts standard compatible plugs during normal use.
  • Tamper-resistant does not mean the outlet is weather-resistant or childproof.

How Tamper-Resistant Receptacle Works

A Tamper-Resistant Receptacle contains spring-loaded shutters behind its contact openings. The shutters stay closed when pressure reaches only one opening, which blocks many small objects. A properly shaped plug applies balanced pressure to both shutters and opens the path to the electrical contacts.

The shutter mechanism operates mechanically and does not depend on batteries, electronics, or a reset button. The device still needs correct wiring and a suitable electrical box. A GFCI receptacle protects against current leakage, while tamper resistance addresses access to the contact openings. Some products combine both features, but each function remains distinct.

From the Electrician Pittsburgh team

When we handle Electrical Code Corrections, we check whether the installed receptacle matches the room, wiring method, and intended use. We also inspect terminal connections, grounding, polarity, and the fit of the cover plate. Our team separates tamper resistance from GFCI protection because the two features address different hazards.

Tamper-Resistant Receptacle in Practice: A Real-World Example

During an Electrical Code Corrections visit, a receptacle in a home's living area may be replaced with a tamper-resistant model when the existing device does not provide the expected protection from object insertion. The work also includes checking wiring condition and device connections.
